ABOUT

Our contribution to the Carrigtwohill Project is to create an interactive map of some of the major areas in the community. Above is our finished map.

Working with the historical society, our focus so far has mainly been on landmarks with historical significance to the community, but throughout the development process we hope to expand that to places of cultural significance, with an emphasis on how immigration has shaped Carrigtwohill. 

The idea was born from a previous project that our map developer, Cyprian, worked on for Limerick. We thought that having something similar for Carrigtwohill would be a great way to celebrate the community and foster interest in the area.

The aim of the map was to bring emphasise to the vast history and cultural value of Carrigtwohill to both the local community and beyond. 

THE PROCESS

We decided that working with the Historical Society in Carrigtwohill would be of the most benefit to our project both because of their extensive knowledge of the local history and because of their passion for where they live. We organised Zoom meetings with the group to get to know them and see what locations they thought would be valuable to our map. 

After speaking with the Historical Society, we came to up with our original four locations, and also discussed possibly expanding our original idea over the Summer. We discussed adding more locations and creating QR codes and brochures to make the map more easily accessible.

After that, we got to work on creating our map! Below is our first prototype.

Throughout the process, we were in constant contact with the Historical Society as it was important to us to understand what people from the area valued and their input on our project.

We also discussed the possibility of including modern locations of cultural significance to the community and want to include locations that highlight the different cultures that make Carrigtwohill such an amazing town.

Currently, we are working on our final design. We're really excited with how it's turning out and we can't wait to share it with you soon!
